A1 Dutch course (A0 > A1)

Are you new to Dutch? The Beginners Basic course at Taalthuis is the right starting point if you want to learn Dutch from the beginning.
This beginner Dutch course is designed for English-speaking, higher educated internationals, including expats, highly skilled migrants, international professionals, partners, au pairs and international students. You learn practical Dutch for daily life in the Netherlands, from introducing yourself to asking simple questions and understanding basic conversations.

Learn Dutch for beginners

In this A1 Dutch course, you build your first foundation in Dutch. You learn useful vocabulary, basic grammar, pronunciation and simple sentences for everyday situations.
You practise through themes, stories, games, listening exercises and speaking activities. You also learn about Dutch habits and culture, so you can better understand daily life in the Netherlands.

  • For: students starting Dutch from scratch
  • Duration: 14 lessons
  • Format: classroom or online
  • Study load: about 7.5 hours per week. Homework: about 5 hours per week
  • Group size: max. 12 students in class, 10 online

  • Materials: textbook, grammar book and e-learning included

At the end of the course, you take a Taalthuis exam. If you attend at least 80% of the lessons, you receive a certificate of attendance.

Course materials and e-learning

Taalthuis uses its own course materials for this level: Kom maar binnen and Het Fundament. You also get access to the Taalthuis e-learning platform for vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar and excercises.
In a face-to-face course you will receive the books during the first lesson. Online students receive them at their homeaddress before the course starts.

Is this Dutch A1 course right for you?

This course is suitable if you have little or no knowledge of Dutch and want a clear, structured beginner course.
If you are native German or Afrikaans, or if you already have some basics in the Dutch language, the Beginners Plus course may be a better fit. If you are unsure, contact us for a level check.

  • Does Taalthuis offer integration courses?

    Taalthuis does not provide specific integration courses or preparation for the Inburgeringsexamen. However, general Dutch language lessons are available, to prepare you for language part of the exam. 

  • Can I use a DUO loan for a course at Taalthuis?

    No, Taalthuis does not accept DUO loans for course payments.

  • Does Taalthuis offer accommodation or assist with visa applications?

    No, Taalthuis does not provide accommodation or visa application assistance.

  • Are there special courses for au pairs and students?

    Yes, Taalthuis offers tailored courses for au pairs and students. These classes group young individuals, often au pairs residing with host families, focussing on Dutch language and culture. We use our own course materials.

  • Can I take classes in the weekends?

    No, we do not offer courses in the weekends.
